There is a good picture in the 1949-1953 shop manual of the bottom of the case (and rea) where the early mount bolts go. If your casr has the dimples they could be drilled out, tapped, and a 1951 mount installed. SOME 1952-54 PG CASES HAVE LIKE DIMPLES WHERE THE DRILLED AND TAPPED BOLTS WHEN IN ON THE EARLIER UNITS. tHE 19 PG MOUNT IS BOLTED TO THE PG CASE ITS SELF. tHE MOUNT IS BOLTED INTO THE EXTENSION ON THE BACK OF THE PG CASE. The cross member for the 1952-1954 pg WAS MOVED BACK ABOUT 5 1/4".

When the engines mounts were changed in 1952 the trans mount was also relocated where it bolts to the mount/cross member. Your problem is the location of the crossmember. Help, I am out of ideas and need advice and maybe even spiritual help.Īnybody have a thought about what I wrote?įilling Station - Chevrolet & GMC Reproduction Parts How could that be unless that transmission doesn't match the car's crossmember and is somehow wedged or stuck? Have I overlooked an obvious connection/problem. I was afraid the mount was jammed with the crossmember and that I might be creating a problem I did not want. and they did NOT in fact I was lifting up the car some. I jacked up the tailshaft of the transmission a little to see them separate. Today before I ordered the mount, I wanted to pull the old out of the car so I might tell if I was ordering the correct one.I removed the two (2) 9/16's nuts & bolts (the ones that hold the mt to the frame)and started out with the two (2) remaining 5/8's bolts that go through the mount and into the (I hope) transmission. I want to replace that mount and see if that helps but now that I think I've found the correct mount for my car (and that's been crazy also because I think at one time my car received a 1953 PG transmission because it starts in low gear and shifts and impossible for a 1951 as they did NOT) anyway according to books I've read they both use a different transmission mount!!!!!!! My car is not a convert. The U-joint/driveline bell coupling is transmitting the noise to the frame thru the bad transmission mount and that along with the engine vibs are playing bad music? This annoying sound I think might be the engine and transmission tailshaft are out of phase and the transmission mount is bad I think real bad and the tailshaft is in contact with the crossmember/frame. Sorry I am just telling what I have done so far so someone might tell me I am either crazy or on the right track. My thought is at 30-40 MPH the Powerglide torque convertor is letting the engine turn quite a bit faster than the driveshaft but at speeds of around 50+ while not "locked up" the engine and driveline are turning almost the same speed but not exactly and so I might be hearing the two "out of phase". Really not any serious vibration but a "harmonic" thing and difficult to describe, but at 50+ MPH it sounds like a twin engine airplane or twin engine boat with the engines almost synchronized. HA! Not much different except fixed bad oil leak at the "ball". 008 off OD of the shaft and it fit perfect no slop and not too tight, so I was sure it was fixed. So I took the yoke to a machine shop and took approx. I forced it in and then was so tight I knew that wouldn't work so I beat the yoke out and tried to pull the Okie out to ream it out and of course the puller wouldn't budge it. All went ok until I drove the Okie bushing into the torque tube and then tried to slip the yoke in and it wouldn't fit. So I went elsewhere and bought all the gaskets/shims for the "bell", U-joint Kit and rebuilt it myself and because I didn't want to do it twice, I replaced the bushing although there was NO play in the old on and I bought the "Okie" bushing. shops won't even look at an old car and 3 they don't know these cars at all! The guys at a certain old Chevy shop didn't want to sell me the parts said I didn't need a U-Joint to take it to a transmission shop locally and let them drive it first? Wow that seemed weird first no such thing close to where I live and two, my experience is most reg. No noise at low speeds and no vibration, but I just knew it was a U-joint. I have a noise like a bad U-joint with a vibration after 45 ish MPH. Car runs and drive very good and I have already replaced most items necessary after a long non use period. I know this one family owned car sat for quit a while but no one left alive there to ask questions. Original paint and interior but both are tired so I just replaced all the interior and I want to leave all the "patina" on the exterior. I have an original 1951 Deluxe Styleline 4 Dr. I am sure this has been covered but I didn't see anything close.
